The Keeper’s Study

The Story Behind The Mad Pen & Quill

The Mad Pen & Quill was born from a lifetime of puzzles, stories, and delightfully sideways thinking. I first fell into Dungeons & Dragons at six years old, and more than four decades later, that love of imagination, shared adventure, and collaborative problem-solving still shapes nearly everything I create. Add to that a lifelong fondness for riddles, wordplay, jokes that land just a little off-kilter, and the last ten-plus years spent diving ever deeper into escape rooms and puzzle games, and the path here starts to make sense. The name itself arrived in one of those rare, electric flashes of clarity — over a glass of wine, beside the first rough sketch of what would become the Mad Pen & Quill mark — and from that moment, this curious little world had a name, a symbol, and a direction.

Meet the Keeper

Puzzle-maker. Storyteller. Dice roller. Dad joker.

I’m Dwight Hulse, the Keeper of The Mad Pen & Quill and the human bringing the idea juice that fuels their ink-stained chaos.

I’m a lifelong puzzle-lover, tabletop storyteller, escape room enthusiast, unapologetic dad joker, and builder of experiences meant to spark curiosity, bring people together, and occasionally earn a truly excellent groan. I’m most drawn to moments of shared discovery: the theory shouted across a table, the group huddled around a clue, the burst of laughter when a solution is clever, ridiculous, or both, and the perfectly timed terrible joke that makes everyone roll their eyes — right before admitting, "Ok, that one was actually kinda good."

Whether I’m designing a classroom escape room, crafting a D&D adventure, or dreaming up a new puzzle-world from scratch, I’m chasing that same bit of magic: the instant when people stop merely participating and start truly playing.

What is The Mad Pen & Quill?

A creative home for puzzles, adventures, and ideas stained with ink.

The Mad Pen & Quill is my creative workshop for story-driven puzzle experiences, escape room-inspired tabletop adventures, and imaginative collaborations that reward curiosity and cleverness. It is part design studio, part personal playground, and part fictional world of its own: a place I call The Scriptorium, where strange ideas are gathered, unraveled, refined, and occasionally allowed to make a glorious mess.

Within its halls dwell The Keeper. the chaotic Mad Pen, and the elegant Quill — three voices that help shape the personality, humor, and peculiar charm of everything built here.

The Mad Pen

&

The Quill

Two troublesome muses.

One very patient Keeper.

The Mad Pen & The Quill are the unruly creative spirits of this little world — equal parts inspiration, interruption, and ongoing editorial complication. The Mad Pen favors riddles, mischief, sideways phrasing, and ideas that arrive splattered with ink. The Quill prefers elegance, precision, lore, and the occasional self-important flourish. Together, they give The Mad Pen & Quill its voice: curious, clever, a little theatrical, and never entirely content to say a thing plainly when it might be more fun to make you think twice.

The Mad Pen

Chaotic, riddling, off-kilter, a little crass, and suspiciously delighted by linguistic crimes.

Elegant, articulate, pompous (in a lovable way), and convinced someone must preserve standards around here.

The Quill

Keeper’s Note: Don’t worry. I’m here, ready to step in to translate the Mad Pen’s crooked logic or let a little air out of the Quill’s more operatic pronouncements.

The Study Opens onto Stranger Rooms…

The Mad Pen & Quill is still being written — one puzzle, one adventure, and one curious collaboration at a time. Continue your wanderings deeper into The Archives to see what has already taken shape, or send us a note if something here has sparked an idea of your own.
